Video Ezy. Big Friday Night.

For a long stretch of the 1980s and 1990s, Video Ezy was a genuinely big deal. Before streaming, before downloads, before the internet flattened everything out, this was how movies entered your life. You walked the aisles, judged films by their covers, and hoped no one had beaten you to the last copy.

In Darwin, that mattered even more. Pre-internet, the place was properly regional. News travelled slowly, trends arrived late, and you felt a long way from anywhere. Except when it came to video stores. Somehow, against all logic, we got new releases on the same day as stores down south. I remember reserving Ghostbusters so I wouldn’t miss out, like it was a concert ticket or a once-only event.

Video Ezy Nightcliff hung on longer than most, finally shutting its doors in 2018. By then the streaming revolution had well and truly swept everything away, but for a lot of us, the habit stuck around longer than it should’ve. Walking in, checking the returns chute, scanning the “New Releases” wall. It was ritual.

In the early 2000s, when I was living in a sharehouse in Petersham, NSW, Video Ezy was still part of my weekly routine. That’s where I picked up some of my all-time favourites. Films you didn’t discover through algorithms, but by accident. Basket Case. The Stuff. Stuff you’d never click on today, but somehow changed your brain anyway.

When I moved house, I forgot to return them. Video Ezy didn’t forget. For the next decade, they politely, then persistently, tried to track me down. Eventually I heard they’d been liquidated. The chase ended. I still have those VHS tapes to this day.

That’s what Video Ezy was. A shared cultural moment. A pre-streaming memory. A time when movies felt scarce, regional Australia felt further away, and choosing what to watch meant leaving the house and hoping for the best.
