1986 was a big year for Darwin. With the release of Crocodile Dundee, all of a sudden the Northern Territory was officially on the map, right next to New York City. Kind of.

It was the beginning of a boom time for NT tourism. Within months of the movie’s release, international tourists started flooding in. Yanks, Japanese, Germans, and family and friends from all over Australia - people who had avoided visiting Darwin up until then - suddenly had the motivation to come and see what all the fuss was about.

There are a few iconic scenes from the movie - "That's not a knife" - but one moment in particular provided a perfectly pervy blend of both titillation and a stern public safety announcement about being croc-wise in the Top End. Rewatching this film makes me realise 99% of any Territorian know-it-all’s crocodile repertoire was learned from this flick. And for us sheltered, pre-internet Darwin kids who grew up in a town with virtually zero beach culture, it’s where we first gained any awareness about those kinds of cheeky swimmers - although we did have Aerobics Oz Style, so it wasn’t entirely foreign.
