The Sando - Newtown

The Sando - Sandringham Hotel, 387 King St, Newtown.

For decades it was one of Sydney’s great live rooms. Sticky carpet. Ringing ears. A stage crammed near the front door - and before that, tucked behind the bar. You didn’t glide through a Sando gig. You earned it.

I played there many times with my band. Sweaty sets. Half-broken monitors. Nights that felt bigger than they probably were.

It’s etched into Australian music lore too - The Whitlams name-checked it in “God Drinks at The Sando” from their 1999 album Love This City. That line alone cemented it as more than a pub. It was mythology on King Street.

Years later it became indoor putt-putt golf. I once ended up there for a corporate work function while I was at a bank. I felt weirdly ashamed. Like we were standing on sacred ground in novelty polos.

The Sando wasn’t fancy. It was loud, imperfect and essential.

This tee’s for the bands, the regulars and anyone who remembers when Newtown still rattled.
