The Playroom wasn’t just a nightclub. It was a rite of passage.
Tucked in behind the Tallebudgera Hotel from 1966, it grew into the southern Gold Coast’s loudest, sweatiest, most glorious institution. If you toured Australia in a band, you played The Playroom. Cold Chisel. INXS. Plenty more who probably don’t remember the night either.
It was sticky floors, ringing ears and driving home half-deaf. Big amps, bigger hair and the kind of crowd that didn’t stand still. By the 90s it leaned fully into chaos – mud wrestling, wet T-shirt comps, dollar drink nights. Subtle it was not.
Demolished in March ’99, but still talked about like it closed last weekend.
Some places fade out.
The Playroom just got louder in memory.
