Tucked away at 40 Flinders Street, Darlinghurst, just off Oxford Street, Taxi Club was one of those places that didn’t need to shout. A low-ego, late-night refuge during the 80s and 90s when Oxford Street pulsed seven nights a week.

Smaller and more intimate than the big Oxford Street dance institutions, Taxi had a reputation for being welcoming, unpretentious and a little chaotic in the best way. It drew a mixed crowd - locals, regulars, club kids, shift workers finishing late, and the stray wanderer who’d missed last drinks somewhere else.

It wasn’t about spectacle. It was about atmosphere. A compact dance floor, DJs spinning house and disco, sweat on the walls, cheap drinks, and the kind of nights that blurred into early morning kebabs.

For many, Taxi Club wasn’t the headline act on Oxford Street - it was the after-party. The place you ended up. And sometimes, the place you stayed.
