Sizzler. Cheese Toast.

Throughout my childhood, my parents would take me to some fairly nice restaurants around Darwin. There was a pretty flash one called The Beagle at the Museum and Art Gallery, and we were regulars at an Italian joint called Charlie’s - where the owner, Charlie, would often bring his temporary wait staff to tears with his antics and his mean streak. The dinner-and-a-show vibe was what made that particular joint a favourite of my Dad.

It was in these establishments that my mother did her very best to instil some fine dining etiquette in both myself and my father.

Sizzler was the first restaurant I was ever let loose in without adult supervision, and I can tell you all of my mother’s best efforts were laid to waste as me and my little dickhead mates descended on the all-you-can-eat salad bar with the giddy, reckless abandon of a pack of stray mutts in an unattended butcher shop.

Sizzler was attached to the cinemas, so it became a tradition of buffet dinner and a flick. The staff at Sizzler Darwin saw us coming each time and welcomed us through clenched grimaces. In particular - as with everyone - we all adored the cheese toast.

It was not until many years later that I came to realise the cheese toast is a trap, and that filling up on that thick, doughy bread before hitting the salad bar was a rookie error - one I would never make today.

But this wisdom and adult cynicism is wasted, as the last Sizzler restaurant shut its doors in 2020. Gone but never forgotten.

Each one’s printed just for you, so double-check your fit before ordering. (Your future self will thank you.) Width is measured armpit-to-armpit, please allow 1-2cm human measurement errors.
