At some point during the family Christmas lunch, someone will bring up politics, AI, or whatever tragedy is dominating the news. Everyone will have an opinion. Some loudly. Some will be wrong. Some will be sincere. Most will just be performing. A few will observe silently.

This design is about the quiet moment before that. The one where an older curlew looks at her earnest, opinionated chick and thinks: you don’t actually have to weigh in on all of this.

Jim Carrey’s talked about it. Buddhism’s been onto it for centuries. Heaps of people just give up and go fishing. Not everything needs a take. Not everything needs outrage. Silence isn’t weakness. Sometimes it’s just opting out of noise.

The chick hasn’t learned that yet. The mother has. Though she’s not always silent herself. She’s seen opinions tied to identity. She’s watched people confuse certainty with relevance. She’s learned the hard way that having no strong view on whatever banal topic has turned into a battleground is often mistaken for a flaw. When really it just means you’ve got better things to do.

This isn’t about being uninformed. It’s about staying sane.
You can care without commenting. You can notice without reacting. You can keep some thoughts inside.
