Salty Plums

No one really knows why Darwin kids got hooked on salty plums. Imported from Asia, rock-hard, wrinkled, and aggressively sour-salty, they somehow became the unofficial lolly of the Top End.

By the ’70s and ’80s, they weren’t just a snack—they were playground currency. A sweaty fist-full of plums could buy you favours, trades, even a bit of street cred. Some swore they cured homesickness, others said they kept the heat stroke away. Mostly, they just puckered your face until you looked like you’d been slapped - and if your skateboard wheel has ever met a stray salty plum seed on the concrete, chances are you've stacked it hard.

They’re still floating around markets, corner shops, and the odd pocket—an acquired delicacy, playground currency, and a true troppo remedy.
