Q Bar — Oxford Street, Darlinghurst (1993–2015)

Upstairs on Oxford Street, above the foot traffic and noise, Q Bar ran for 22 years — opening in 1993 and closing its doors in 2015. It wasn’t a mega-club. It was a loft space. A bit scruffy. A bit sticky. Exactly right.

Q was known for being an alternative to the norm. Not the biggest room on the strip, but one of the most dependable. DJs, live bands, drag, pop nights, indie nights — whatever the soundtrack, the dance floor filled. You’d ride the famously unreliable lift if it was working, or take the stairs if it wasn’t. Either way, you ended up in that lofty party den above Oxford Street.

When Q announced its closure, it didn’t list celebrity drop-ins or headline acts. It thanked the regulars. The class of ’93ers through to the fresh-faced ’15ers. The sticky carpet. The sunrise walks home. The nights remembered clearly and the ones completely lost to the early hours.

It closed on July 19, 2015. The end of an era, officially. Unofficially, it lives on in every story that starts with “Remember Q?”
