Mars Club — Oxford Street, Darlinghurst

Located at 163–169 Oxford Street, Darlinghurst — in the building that would later house Byblos — Mars Club was part of Oxford Street’s 1990s club circuit, when the strip was a neon artery of late-night Sydney.

Mars wasn’t one of the mega-venues, but it sat right in the thick of it. A vertical Oxford Street sign, loud music spilling onto the footpath, and that constant churn of club kids, regulars and first-timers moving between doors. Like many 90s venues along the strip, it traded in house, dance and high-energy late nights — sweat, strobes and whatever time “closing” actually meant.

Oxford Street in the 90s wasn’t just nightlife — it was culture. A place of visibility, freedom and chaos in equal measure. Clubs like Mars were part of that ecosystem: not polished, not corporate — just loud, immediate and alive.

Years later, the address would become Byblos. But for a stretch in the 1990s, it was Mars — another glowing sign in a decade when Oxford Street barely slept.
