Lift Off. Cursed EC.

I was technically too old for Lift Off when it hit the ABC in the early 90s. Which is probably why it lodged itself in my brain like an unresolved childhood tax return. You’d flick it on after school and there it was. EC. That faceless rag doll with the soft, sagging head and barely-there features. Not smiling. Not frowning. Just… existing.

In various religious traditions, faceless figures aren’t accidents. In parts of Judaism and Islam, avoiding carved human likeness is about resisting idolatry. In some folk practices, dolls without faces are meant to stop spirits attaching themselves. No eyes. No mouth. Nothing for anything to enter. Comforting, in theory.

EC did not feel comforting.

Designed by Terry Denton and physically sculpted by Ron Mueck, EC sits in that strange space between kids’ TV and quiet existential dread. Mueck later became famous for hyper-real sculptures like Dead Dad, Boy, and Mask II (that enormous sleeping head that looks like it’s about to inhale the entire gallery). Knowing that the bloke behind those unsettling masterpieces also built EC explains a lot.

This tee leans into that memory. The beige knit. The patchwork legs. The blank expression that isn’t smiling because it doesn’t need to. It already knows something.

If you grew up in Australia in the 90s, you either forgot EC completely… or you didn’t.

Each one’s printed just for you, so double-check your fit before ordering. Width is measured armpit-to-armpit. Please allow 1–2cm human measurement errors.
