Hello Hector

Every afternoon in the build-up, the same thing happens. The sky boils over the Tiwi Islands, climbing 20 kilometres high and fanning out like some overworked ceiling fan. Pilots named it Hector back in the war. Locals just shrug and say, yep, here he comes again.

Hector the Convector’s arrival is the official notice that the easy season is over. The air is thick enough to drink, tourists pack up and leave, and the weekend markets suddenly have room to move. Lightning cracks across the horizon most nights, a free light show for anyone stubborn enough to still be here – but it often doesn’t bring any rain. At least not in town. They always get rain down in the ’Doo before Christmas.

It’s hot, it’s sticky, and it’s only for the hard core. Hello Hector.
