My family survived Cyclone Tracy back in 1974. My sister is still triggered by the sound of strong wind to this day, and I’m well aware of the trauma many survivors still carry. So it was no surprise to witness the absolute balls-up, clusterfuck of a reaction to the Cyclone Tracy kinetic sculpture installed at Bundilla Beach, in the prestigious suburb of Fannie Bay.
What is considered art? What monument is appropriate? And how was the decision made to pay a Kiwi artist $700k for the commemorative sculpture?
These questions took on a life of their own, overshadowing what was meant to be a time of reflection and coming together, and they practically derailed the entire 50th anniversary of Cyclone Tracy.
Personally, I believe Darwin itself – and the regular people who live here – is the monument that best reflects the spirit of this city: a testament to the tenacity of those who survived, those who rebuilt, and a memorial to those we lost to Cyclone Tracy.
