G'day.

In Darwin in the 1980s, we had two TV channels: Channel 8 (a mish-mash of 7, 9, and 10) and, of course, the ABC.

Afternoon television on the ABC delivered some absolute classics — Monkey Magic, Inspector Gadget, Dr Snuggles, and The Goodies. But there was always a five-minute gap between time slots where ABC programmers would drop in a filler. Sometimes it was Roger Glover’s Love Is All (The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper’s Feast). Sometimes we were treated to maypole dancers in Mike Oldfield’s Portsmouth.

But the five minutes between children’s programming and the 6pm ABC News belonged to Peter Russell-Clarke.

Come & Get It ran for nine years and around 900 episodes, and we all loved Peter.

This was more than just a lifestyle show. With a focus on healthy eating and everyday living, sometimes it featured guests, sometimes it visited food production sites, explained food history, and it always finished with a cooking segment. How the hell they fit all of that into 5 minutes is a marvel to this day.

And if you’ve ever seen the blooper reels from the legendary “Where’s the Cheese?” ad campaign, you’ll adore the late larrikin even more. It would have been fitting to drop a big f-bomb on this tee instead of "G'day", but this is the time slot between children's programming and the news, after all.

This tee is an ode to the late, great Peter Russell-Clarke (he was also a cartoonist and the illustration on this tee was drawn by Peter).
